I’ve had cats ever since I started living on my own. The last one, Mientje, passed away in the summer of 2022. Unlike the others, I didn’t bury her in the garden. We had a dog by then, and I was afraid she might dig her up. So I left Mien with the vet, to be cremated along with other pets. I still regret that. Mientje was a quiet presence. Independent, unobtrusive — so much so that you’d sometimes forget she was there. But when she was gone, her absence echoed loudly. A quiet spot in the garden would have suited her. This painting is that spot. A resting place in color and silence.
